A Message from Mazahir:

Dear Friends,

On November 7, Iowa City will be electing new City Council members. I am running for one of two At-Large seats. It would be my great honor to have your support.

Spring and summer have been filled with parades, community picnics, and the Farmers Market. I’ve been meeting with unions, city staff, community leaders, and local organizations. Iowa City residents are sharing with me their concerns and ideas. I am grateful for every moment of this campaign so far.

When I came to this country in 1997, I had to start over. Though I was a civil engineer in Sudan, moving to the US meant resetting my education and career path. I worked hard, became a citizen, started a family, and moved to Iowa City. Here, I earned a medical technician degree from Kirkwood and helped to found the Center for Worker Justice.

I promise that I will work hard every day to represent you and to keep Iowa City a great place to live.

My success in Iowa City has been because of people who reached out to me. Iowa Citians gave me information about local resources, invited me to meetings, introduced me to friends, and welcomed my husband, children, and me into our school and our neighborhood. The people of Iowa City included me in our community—and made it possible for me to include others, too.

Now I want to give back to the city that has given so much to me.

I want to work together so we can:
• Meet our community’s need for affordable housing
• Foster economic development for all, with jobs that pay a livable wage
• Support vibrant neighborhoods
• Celebrate and support Iowa City’s diversity
• Fill gaps in our transportation infrastructure
• Engage all residents in community building

So, I humbly ask for your vote. I promise that I will work hard every day to represent you and to keep Iowa City a great place to live.

Please never hesitate to contact me with questions, concerns, or advice. Thank you for your support and encouragement.
